July 2007 July 28, 2007 Yesterday, the Burr Ridge Church celebrated a day of Prayer and Fasting. As I was feeling hunger pangs at about 1:30pm, I my mind thought of the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand. In Mark 6:37 Jesus tells his disciples, “You give them something to eat.” How often is it that we try to feed people, or feed ourselves, and we have no bread. We are hungry, even starving, and there is no bread for us anywhere. This is a metaphor for the life lived without God. But when we sit at the feet of Jesus—when put him first—He offers us nourishment. And there will be baskets of food left over. Thanks to Leigh and Alberto, we were able to get the Madison Street property mowed on Wednesday afternoon. Next week we will be having our regularly scheduled Church Board Meeting. It will be held at 7:00pm Monday evening. An Elders’ Meeting will follow the Church Board at 8:30. Both will be held at Lord of Life. Don’t forget to invite your family, friends, and neighbors to participate in our Back- to-School Celebration. There are only three weeks left! Make sure you pick up some flyers after church. I am delighted to be back at Burr Ridge this week! My travels have been far and wide, but now I’m home to stay. It feels like we have a lot going on this summer! The new social committee has gotten to work. Tomorrow we will be having Picnic in the Park at the We are also in high gear getting ready for our Education Sabbath. Make sure you grab some of the new flyers to hand out to your friends and neighbors. We still need more greeters, members for the follow-up team, and expertise with advertising. If you would like to get involved, talk to me or anyone on the Outreach Committee. It is also time for another round of mowing on our various pieces of property. Next week: the
July 7, 2007 Before Jesus walked on water, “He left for the mountain to pray” (Mark 6:46). Just after Mark recounts how Jesus fed five-thousand people on the mountain side, we find this strategic hint. Jesus took some time to get away from His disciples and the crowd to pray. It is very hard to get away. So many things and people demand a chunk of our time. But if we really want to follow Jesus’ example, we will need to find time to pray, by ourselves, undisturbed. I challenge you to follow Jesus’ example this week. Find some time at least one day this week when you can get away and pray! Last week we launched our plans to host an Education Sabbath on August 18. I am excited about this program! It will give us an opportunity to dedicate our students for a new school year and also to invite our friends and neighbors to join us and dedicate their own students. I do hope that each of you take up the challenge and invite someone to this special event. The Social Committee is happy to announce Picnic and Games in the Park! Mark you calendars for July 22nd It is something how weddings and funerals are hard to stay away from. Last weekend I made a last minute trip to be with the Atkins family who lost their father. It was a real blessing to be with them and to celebrate the life of a man that meant so much to so many. And this weekend I am making a planned trip to attend the wedding of a dear friend in Next week, Hadassah and I will be working for The Institute of World Mission at Home | About Us | Calendar | The Pastor's Blog | Prayer | Podcasts | Schools | Ministries | News | Media | Bookstore | Picture Gallery | Building Project | Contact Us |
