May 2007 May 26, 2007 Someone once said, “Memories are expensive things, you pay for them with a chunk of your lives,” and I would like to add, a chunk of your hearts. This weekend it is appropriate for us to remember… so many of our friends and loved ones are no longer with us. As our nation remembers those who have fallen in battle, we must remember all who are waiting for the resurrection from the dead. As we sing “We Have This Hope” at the end of our service, direct your thoughts to those who are waiting for the resurrection: our family members, our friends, our communities, and our soldiers. Most of you have by now heard that the One or two of you have expressed interest in my proposal to study through Epic, John Eldredge’s little book that has provided the basis for our current sermon series on the Great Controversy. I am still taking suggestions on how we can make such a study accessible to the most people. So if you are interested and have any good suggestions, please let me know. To close with, I want to encourage each of you to continue to take your health seriously. Our bodies are all different as are our health philosophies. But if you can, try and do something for your flesh and bones. A good place to start is with the old eight health principles. There is no quackery here! Remember NEW START:
If you can, try to work on at least one of these principles this coming week. You cannot loose! May 19, 2007 Happy campmeeting weekend! Most of you know that this is campmeeting weekend for the Northern Illinois Conference. This year the event is being held at the College of DuPage (COD). As a conference employee, I have to shoulder my portion of the responsibility, and that portion this year is the On Monday, the Church Board decided that we should skip our May Potluck which had been rescheduled for this weekend. Last weekend, the fellowship room was occupied by the Lutherans, this week only a handful of people were planning to attend the potluck, and next Sabbath is a holiday weekend. So we’ll miss getting together… We’ll have to make up for it somehow. Friday morning, the Joint Venture Committee (JVC) met to discuss our property development plans. This committee is made up of three conference officials and three Burr Ridgers and is responsible for the development of all the various properties we own with the conference. So most of you want to know one thing: what’s happening? First, after many months of discussion, we are taking concrete steps toward selling our Madison Street Property. Second, we are working on completing the acquisition of several additional lots in Lemont/Homer Glen that will maximize the value of the 17 acres we already own. Please keep this process in your prayers! There is still much work to be done, but I am confidant that God is behind us. By pulling the strings He has placed in our hands, we will be that much closer to having our own permanent home. On a sad note, please remember Sorin and Dupe and their families in your prayers. Sorin’s sister-in-law, Marcia Hughes, passed away Tuesday after a long struggle with cancer. The funeral is today. Finally, I have titled this periodical “The Pastor’s Blog.” One of you challenged me on using “blog” to describe something printed on paper. Well, I want to inform you that this is now a real, online blog. You can find it at our new church website! www.burrridgeadventist.org has been updated! Log on and take a look. We are still working on it so keep coming back. Last weekend Hadassah and I were in Berrien Springs, Michigan to celebrate my graduation from Seminary. As we moved through the weekend events, I was reminded of the importance of having the whole family on the same page. It is important to know who is doing what, where, and when. While word of mouth is some of the best communication, it has the habit of jumping people—leaving them out of the loop. I’ve realized that the same maybe true for our church family. So I have assigned myself the task of writing a weekly “what’s what.” I intend to place this in the bulletin each week as well as online (I’m still working out the details of posting it online). More than an announcement sheet, it is intended to be my line of communication to you. I want to inform you of what we’ve been doing as a church and how you can be a part of it. This seems to be the season for meetings. Now that our nominating process has been completed and the offices are set for the next year, it is time to get our structures working. The new church board will meet this Monday at 7:00 p.m. followed by and Elders’ meeting at 8:30 p.m. The Outreach Committee will also be meeting after Prayer Meeting on Wednesday (8:00 p.m.). The yearly HAA Constituency meeting will be held on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. I have a letter to give to each of the delegates today. Next week I will be at the Northern Illinois Campmeeting. This is the campmeeting that has traditionally been held at Broadview Academy. This year it will be held on the campus of the College of DuPage. All of you are invited to attend. Burr Ridge will still hold Sabbath services; the speaker has yet to be determined. We are still working on the renovation process of our little building in Lemont. The roof leak has been fixed, now it’s a matter of fixing the lighting, painting, and installing carpet. It has been a slow process, but we have managed to do it very affordably. Big thanks to Dan and Margi, Tato, and David who have done a most of the work so far. The great weather we’ve been having has a drawback. The grass has started to grow and we are responsible for keeping our Madison Street property in Burr Ridge mowed. I will be working with Margi, our new head deacon, to set up a mowing schedule. We will be calling on some of the deacons and other helpful volunteers to get the job done. As we continue with this sermon series on the Story God is Telling, I am becoming more and more interested in having a Bible study at which we can read and discuss John Eldredge’s powerful little book Epic. If you would be interested in participating in such a study, please speak to me. Let’s talk about how we can make it happen. Well, if you have read this far, Congratulations! You’ve made it to the end of the very first “Pastor’s Blog.” If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at pastordoss@gmail.com. Have a great week!
